Owasippe Overview

CAC's Owasippe PageThe OSA does not own or operate the Owasippe Scout Reservation, but we do help support it through a number of programs.

Owasippe is in fact owned and operated by the
Chicago Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. Since 1911, Owasippe Scout Reservation has provided an exceptional summer camping experience, making it the oldest continuously operating Scout camp in the nation.

Saluting Owasippe's CentennialLocated seven miles from Whitehall, Michigan, Owasippe consists of nearly 5,000 acres of lush forests, streams and hiking trails, making it second only to Philmont in total acreage.

Owasippe serves campers from across the nation, from nearby Indiana and Illinois to as far away as Oklahoma and Texas. It attracts a highly capable staff, numbering more than 200 men and women ages 15 and up.

Camp Blackhawk, located on Big Blue Lake, is home to the Fossett Sailing Base. Hot meals are delivered (3 times daily) to Blackhawk's large dining hall. With its high-beamed ceiling, the Blackhawk dining hall invites Scouts into the fellowship of Scouting. Blackhawk has a lakefront swimming and boating area.

Camp Wolverine, on Lake Wolverine is home to some of the best fishing in central Michigan. Hot meals are delivered (3 times daily) directly to the campsites thus creating the epitome in Troop camping, insuring endless opportunities for adventure. Wolverine has a swimming pool and a lakefront boating area.

Camp Carlen, on Sauger Lake is home to the Carlen Venture Base. The Venture Base offers complete access to Owasippe's programs including: overnight horseback treks, all-day canoe treks (all the way into Whitehall), COPE Crew challenges, scenic trail hiking, sailing on Big Blue Lake, fishing, Bronze Award requirements, even just relaxing. The Crew decides how much or how little to accomplish, and even meal times are flexible.

Camp Reneker, located in the heart of Owasippe, offers a comprehensive program for families. With sports and craft programs, Reneker offers a rustic resort experience.

The High Adventure program, serving the entire reservation, offers a variety of unique summer camp experiences. Participants can take a five-day backpacking trek through the nearby Manistee National Forest, enjoy an afternoon canoe or tubing trip down the White River or take a horseback ride into Owasippe's backcountry. Outpost programs include astronomy, fishing, wrangler and photography which offer a wide range activities. The Charles F. Nagel Memorial C.O.P.E. Base and the all-new Christopher Hill Memorial Climbing Tower provide older Scouts with challenging leadership and team building exercises.
